Cleaning our homes can often require a plethora of products, many of which contain a cocktail of chemicals. A great alternative to this is using natural everyday ingredients which many people have stocked in their cupboards or can purchase cheaply.

As well as saving you money, using natural ingredients has a much more wholesome feel – you won’t have to handle potentially irritant chemicals, less of these chemicals will be released into the environment and you’ll have an overall healthier, fresher home. With this in mind, here’s some suggestions of how you can take your cleaning back to basics.

1. Vinegar

Pristine, clear windows are a must during the springtime, so we can truly soak up the sunlight and flood our homes with natural daylight. To make sure your windows are sparklingly clean, you can simply combine two cups of filtered water and two tablespoons of white vinegar with 10 drops of essential oil.

2. Citrus fresh

Having a vibrant, fragrant scent throughout the home is a must in the spring and summer months. Not only is a pleasant-smelling home always an appealing prospect, it will also evoke sunnier weather feelings when the UK’s all-too-common rain rears its head. So, freshen things up by adding slices of lemon, sprigs of rosemary and vanilla extract to a pan of water and allowing it to simmer. This will allow the sweet fragrances to diffuse into spaces around your home.

3. Bicarbonate of soda

We’ve all come across particularly tough stains, especially on kitchen worktops and tables. A brilliant way to tackle these stains is to sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over the area in question, cut a lemon in half and use the cut side to remove stubborn stains from hard surfaces. Just be sure to check the type of surface won’t be damaged by the abrasiveness of the bicarb.

4. Olive oil

Wooden furniture should receive some love and care from time to time in order to breathe new life into it. To naturally buff up wooden furniture, try a ¾ cup of olive oil, a ¼ cup of white vinegar and 30 drops of essential oil for fragrance. Your furniture will have a lovely scent and a renewed shine in no time.

5. Essential oils

This spray is a great way to freshen up your home for guests in just a few minutes. Simply mix a ½ cup of white vinegar, two tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda and a few drops of essential oil in an empty spray bottle.
